PIA — Additional Product ID

Carries an additional identifier for a product. The LIN segment gives the main code, usually a GTIN; PIA adds alternatives such as the supplier’s article number, the manufacturer’s code or the buyer’s own code.

Watch out
The qualifier in the second component states the kind of code: SA is the supplier’s item number, BP the buyer’s part number and IN the buyer’s own item number. Taking the first PIA line without reading the qualifier means matching against the wrong system’s code.
